This past weekend I was in Calgary, Alberta doing a charity Mother’s Day shoot for the Twin, Triplet & More Association of Calgary.  It is no secret that I have have had a multiple pregnancy – I carried my beautiful triplets to 35+3 weeks and during that time got to know many wonderful women in this organization (past and present).  The idea of this shoot was to help create an opportunity for some of the MoM’s (Mothers of Multiples) to have a small reserve session with their children.  Each MoM would have an image of herself and each of her children as well as a group shot because regardless of whether or not you have multiples or not, you know darn well that you are NEVER in any images with your children.  This session was built around making the pictures accessible to the families that access this important organization and the images that I took so far have been simply amazing.  I will be making a few separate blog posts as I go through and pick my personal favorite from each session to share from this shoot and I hope that they are enjoyed as much as I enjoyed taking them and getting to know my friends that much better.

Ursula.

This first image is of my dear friend Ursula and her four daughters (sans one darling and very handsome son).  Ursula has been part of my life for about two years now and when I first met her I had no idea that anyone that had triplets could actual make it past the first year.  I was so tired and so exhausted…and then someone at the very first retreat I went on with this fantastic club introduced us and I fell in love like all people do when they first meet someone that they know will be a great addition to their life.  Ursula was such a strong fierce women who clearly had it together – I don’t know if she would agree with me on that point but I hope she does.  At a time that I was scared to death she brought me up, made me smile and gave me hope – not to make it sound too cliche.

As we got to know each other, mostly through Facebook over the past two years I have watched little snippets of my dear friends life…watching her children wrestle and go nuts, enjoying her love for beekeeping and burlesque and enjoying her posts that are so grounded and enjoyable.  Ursula is starred as a “friend” on Facebook and with that I get every post from her and I make sure to never miss one.  This lady has a lot to say and so much wisdom behind her words…and let’s face it…she is a role model for many beautiful women in her life and her girls are at the top of that list.  I can’t imagine a better mom for those beautiful girls…they will grow with a strong heart, a smart mind and an undying love for life.

Thank you Ursula for coming to this session.  I have wanted to meet your girls forever and was so excited to meet your two older babies – it was a very exciting session and I loved every second of it.  I just regret not being able to visit longer.  Happy Mother’s Day to you friend – you deserve it and I hope your day is the most special ever.

Hilary.

Hilary is an inspiration.  Hilary is drop dead gorgeous.  Hilary is as kind and beautiful as she looks.

This is no joke.  Hilary and I first met likely online before Christmas two years ago and then in person at the 2013 TTMAC Christmas Party.  I was doing the Santa Pictures for the day and noticed a tired but sparkling lady near the back of the room with two little people and a beautiful young daughter.  We saw each other and started chatting where I found out that Hilary was a fellow triplet mommy like myself who had lost one of her dear babies while they were still in utero.

Hilary is very forthcoming with her story and while I do not feel the need to elaborate (I am much too private for that) I would be the first to say that Hilary has a strength inside her that shines so bright on the outside.  In my entire life I have never met a women who is as beautiful on the outside as she is on the inside and for someone as beautiful as Hilary is it goes a long way to sharing her character with everyone.   I have never heard Hilary (or her wonderful and handsome hubby) ever raise their voices or even suggest that they would have to for any reason.  Hilary and her hubby are amazing musicians and are so genuine.

I will meet many women in my life, but Hilary will always top my list of wonderful people that deserve all the happiness in the world.  She loves all four of her children with her whole heart and always makes me happy whenever I speak to her.  Her grace and class is humbling and I hope dearly that she has the very best Mother’s Day.  She deserves it and I know everyone around her will let her know how much she is loved and appreciated.  Happy Mother’s Day Hilary.

Ann.

Ann is a new lady in my life.  We met a few months back through the TTMAC website where I found out she had triplets just like me…and on top of that they were born one week before mine and she carried them just a little past 36 weeks if my memory is correct (which is a guess at the best of times…but I think I am right).  We have chatted a few times online and her and I are on the same page for so many aspects of our lives.  Her children are so beautiful…and she has two beautiful little girls like I do and a son.  I can tell you that her babies all have varying degrees of personality as well and they reminded me so much of my babies…it made me laugh.  With triplets there always seems to be a Type A, a Baby-Baby and a Joker.  Her babies were no different and they were so well behaved – they were a pure joy to capture.

What I like the most about Ann is that she knows how lucky she is and she knows how blessed she is to have her babies in her life.  Her love for them overflows and was so evident during our session.  Each picture is a testament to the time, commitment and love triplets take up in your life.  It is an absurd amount of work and I can’t even begin to tally up our dairy bill between Milk, Cheese and Yogurt each week but to have three amazing, beautiful and charming children at once is something that none of the triplet mommies in this post would turn down for anything.  Ursula’s babies are getting bigger and getting very grown up, Hilary’s babies are so beautiful and active, always carrying their sibling with them everywhere they go in their hearts and Ann is just starting her journey like myself and so many others into toddler and then childhood.

All of the Mother’s that I photographed this weekend are beautiful, amazing and deserve so much credit for the hours that they put in every day, every week, every month…you get the hint.  You just never get a break when you have multiples and you are always “on.”  I hope that these sessions have given back to you all the fact that despite the tears, thrown food, temper tantrums, illness, exhaustion, feeling poor all the time (or maybe that is just me because of my dress addiction for my girls) that you are the most important, beautiful and best mother your children could have.

I hope to have my second post up in a day or two with my next few mama’s who participated in the sessions in completely random order.

I wish you goodnight and hope you all have a sunny day tomorrow.

Suzie

Looks like you took some nice pictures this past weekend. Glad to have you back home 🙂

  • Mark Cogswell

What a beautiful project! I came to the page via the Facebook page of one of your subjects, who is an acquaintance, and had an unfortunate typo jump out at me. Assuming that you can edit this, you may want to change “fourth coming” to “forthcoming”.

  • I am SOOOO excited to see the rest of these, Suzanne!! What an incredible few moments that was, just me and my kiddos on camera 🙂 I hadn’t realized until we got there exactly how special, and how necessary, these photos were going to be!! Thank you a million times again, you put your heart and soul into your work and it shows. So much love to you and your family!! Thank you!!

  • Thank you Mark! I will make that correction 🙂

  • Your so welcome Hilary! They are beautiful and will make many MoM’s eager to have this session done as well!

  • Andrea

Your pictures always tell the most amazing story and always seem to capture just the perfect moment. You are one amazingly talented woman!

  • Thank you so much Andrea. I always want my images to be more than just worthy of a scrapbook. I really appreciate the compliment.

Last week I received some of the most exciting news I have received ever in my professional career.  First Blush Photography is now an official award winning photography company.  The image that won was the one above I had taken last summer at a good friends home near Caroline, AB.  She sent me on a very exciting trip via an iPhone location pin that sent me into the back woods near Rocky Mountain House, AB.  The long of the short of it had me driving for about 4hrs when I was only initially around 50 minutes from her home initially.

When I finally arrived at her home I was greeted by the most lovely dinner of lasagna and Caesar salad and then it was time to get to work.  This image came from a 20 minute mini session that was booked to just capture her four boys – the twins and their two handsome older brothers.  We had such a good time and shared so many laughs in that short time just before the beautiful summer sun disappeared for the night.  There was dancing, singing and a little chubby dog by the name of ‘Fetchy’ that would run in and out of the frame – my friends fifth child, like all pet owners understand so well.

All of the boys were a pure dream to photograph.  They were so full of life and enthusiasm despite me having a camera stuffed in their faces the whole time.  They posed, they played and most of all they showed the love they have for each other.  I grew up as an only child and never had that constant friend that was available to play with and have fun with – as well as have many fights with.  The four of them had such an amazing bond together – they just loved and enjoyed every second of the day and the opportunity to play around in the dirt, get dirty and show off for the camera.

I had had an idea about half way through and asked my friend whether she thought the boys would be willing and/or able to sit back to back for a few seconds.  If you know my friend she kind of looked at me like “uhhhhhhh…if you want to” and rolled her eyes in the most amusing of ways.  Between herself and her husband they got the boys positioned and settled so that they could jump backwards in the most exiting and awkward of ways when I gave the signal.  “1, 2, 3…GO” and they two boys sat there and looked at them…more confused why both parents just flung themselves sideways away from them, in a half ninja – half drunken college student style.

The boys continued to sit there – gazing at me with the most beautiful eyes and soulful expressions.

Let te me tell you about the composition of this picture as well as specifically I edited it in such a way that I wanted it to tell more of a story then just two beautiful boys sitting back to back.

The boys are beautifully handsome.  There is no doubt about it.  They are little cherubs and are as bright and funny as they are angelic.  So how did I get THIS image you may ask – because toddler twin boys are possibly more exciting at times then my own two and a half year old triplets.

The boys are good boys and really were interested in what I was doing.  They are extremely identical but you can definitely tell some differences in how they sit, smile and how they use their body language to express themselves.  They were sitting on a road with lots of dirt and weeds and if you look closely you can see that where they are sitting has a different patch of road in front of each of them – the road is not identical and neither are they intrinsically.  The background was duplicated and flipped…again like the boys seem to be and a beautiful glow was added to the top of the image to create a light feeling of innocence and beauty.  Multiple corrections and hand edits were also used to create the image but those just come with the territory.

It was a pure pleasure taking this image and one that I will never forget.

The once was a little girl who loved to explore.  Actually two little girls. They often wandered through the tall grasses and, exploring, enjoying and learning about all the beauty and wonder around them.

The Once Upon A Time sessions are tailored to your child and a concept around them, like Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, or any other popular fairytale character they love.

Oh my goodness! I love everything about this session! These are absolutely amazing!

  • This is so beautiful 🙂 If I had kids this age I would totally get this done for them. What a beautiful keepsake!

  • These are perfect and I love the little red riding hood theme. Such deep colors. Beautiful photography!

A few months back I was desperate to find two dresses for the First Blush Photography Dress Bank.  These dresses were to also adorn my children in the summer along the banks of Gull Lake, Alberta by Red Deer Alberta so that I may always have the memories of my daughters in “Cinderella” style outfits that Tutu Du Monde is famous for – as well have a pair of outfits for when I do my lovely Twin, Triplet and More Association of Calgary sessions in the summer.  I loved these dresses.  I needed them desperately.  Where do you find dresses though that are no longer available for purchase?  Facebook of course!!!  I am a member of several designer dress buy and sell pages on Facebook and a lovely lady by the name of Ericka messaged me with an idea.  If I only wanted to take some images of my daughters in the dresses, she was starting a company by the name of Rainey’s Closet.  This was a rental business out of Pensacola, Florida and she was very happy to send me some dresses to take some images of and send back to her.

Several snags later (thanks US/CAN customs), they finally arrived and it was seriously a moment of beauty.  I have purchased many beautiful dresses in the past, but to get so much in one package was magical.  My photography finger was twitching as I opened up the box to find a whole slew of beautiful garments that my girls were very excited about trying on.  First Blush Photography spent the next few days capturing both little girls in many beautiful outfits, all by Tutu Du Monde that made them shine and shimmer.  The dresses were brand new and still had that “new dress” smell…yah…I purchase a lot of dresses.  Lol.

Each dress was so perfect – and had an accessory to match!  The blue feather headbands, the large plume headbands, the lovely butterfly clip.  I could go on and on and on about every hand stitched, hand made beautiful detail that is on these dresses and accessories, but I am pretty sure that you get the hint.  My favorite dress however was the Estella in Mink that is the second picture down in the gallery.  It was the perfect dress for my daughter as she has darker eyes but beautiful creamy skin.  The brown and beige detailing and adornment was just perfect and suited her perfectly.  Matched with the brown feather headband it made it perfect…alas though – she disagreed.

Unfortunately for most of my followers, Rainey’s Closet is only shipping State side now, which is frustrating for all other users of rental services but understandable after USPS lost the package going back to Ericka so if you are in the USA, you are in luck!  Anywhere else you will have to take your business elsewhere, or just look to purchase the dresses yourself if you become a diehard fan of any of the beautiful brands that she carries.  The Canadian/US exchange is horrid right now but the Canadian/Australian exchange is pretty much on par so shopping overseas is “ok.”

It was a dream to have so many designer dresses arrive at one time and have the opportunity to work with such a lovely, patient lady.  I wish Rainey’s Closet the very best of luck and hope that the beautiful dresses adorn many beautiful little girls in the future.

Let’s start off with who I am before we get into who Lacey Lane is.

My name is Suzanne Taylor and I am a work at home mom near Red Deer, Alberta to a 4.5 year old boy and THREE almost 2.5 year old Girl/Boy/Girl triplets.  In another time I used to be a social worker where I worked for many years in Children’s Services and also in psychiatrics.  I loved being a social worker despite the never ending stress and paperwork. I will be honest and say I miss it as well as it was rarely boring and I haven’t done it in so long I am probably forgetting some of the reasons that I didn’t miss it immediately after leaving…lol. Choosing to start a family really began my journey into photography which is why I initially began photographing.  I always wanted to take ‘good pictures’ of my children ‘one day’ when we had ‘one or two’.  Fortunately, my goal was met and likely I have thousands upon thousands of images of all four children that I love and will cherish forever.  I post many of these images and enter them in competitions as well, hoping to place so I can market that and hopefully bring more business in – who doesn’t want their children’s images captured by a multi-published (which I am), award winning (which I am still not) photographer? So – one thing that I know for a fact is that the public likes variation, as in seeing the same images over and over makes them bored.  I know I can take a great picture, and I know that I can edit well, but it’s not really enough anymore.
