Red Deer Photographer | First Blush Photography » Red Deer Photographer servicing wedding and portrait photography needs

I wanted to write about accessories and photography props today and the importance of using them correctly when photographing infants, babies, children or teenagers.  All too often in the photography industry the prop options that are available are overwhelming.  Attend any RTS sale on Facebook or Google+ and you will be bombarded with options. I have been a photographer for 8 years now and over the years have purchased thousands of dollars worth of hats, tiebacks, blankets, baskets, stuffers and the list goes on and on.  It becomes a competition in a sense to beat out the next photographer in having the newest and best images possible to get that sale…but at what cost?

I wish to make clear that if you, my reader loves big crazy props – all the best to you!  There is always a time and place for props.  I have seen beautiful images over the years which have been extremely prop heavy and very well done.  This post is to simply outline my use of props and introduce you to the style I have built my brands around.

The principle behind all of First Blush Photography’s images is to just focus on the subject and keep it simple. I don’t use complicated backgrounds and I am not prop heavy – I tried it the other way for the first few years but just wasn’t sold on it. It wasn’t my style and I have never regretted abandoning so much of what I first stared with. Style is an evolution and mine is just classically simple and timeless. That brings me to the subject of my post and the importance of accessories. I *think* we are finally past the Gerber Daisy era.  As a photographer I have to be completely honest and tell you that they repulse me.  Sticking a headband on a newborn or baby where the child looks like a potted plant is terribly wrong in my opinion and I am always sad when I see it (though thankfully not for awhile now). It was a phase that we are hopefully passed, but the point I am trying to make is that using the wrong kind/size/shape or even colour of accessory can take away and distract the viewer from the importance of an image.  I want my subject to shine and that becomes impossible when all your looking at is the prop.

Simple is best.  It will always be best.

This was the philosophy I shared with First Blush Photography’s sister business Lamb. Newborn and Baby Props Alike.  I started Lamb about a year and a half ago and have spent many hours designing and crafting delicate tiebacks and floral wreaths to adorn and accentuate a newborn, not overpower them with the lights and sirens of large crocheted flowers (again – no hate to the crochet folks).  Even my latest shoot with my daughters included some very awesome and fun hair pieces from Tutu Du Monde.  They are just enough to stand out, but accent the clothing so well.  I think the older a child is the more fun you can have with all sorts of props so long as it fits the tone and subject matter well.  Coordinating colors can be quite important, especially for the newborn photographers out there…if your tieback does not match your blanket it will never appeal as much to the eye then if it did…unless it contrasts in the right way.  I feel like I am trying to understand SEO while typing this…always a thousand exceptions and examples.  Lol.

At the end of the day, only you have an idea of what you want to photograph.  Maybe it is huge Gerber Daisies.  Maybe it is not.  The choice is up to you and how you want to present yourself to the world.

  • This is an awesome article! It is so important to focus on the subject and not the props but they can definitely help to enhance the final photograph. Great work!

  • Good stuff. I am expecting my first grandchild and I am looking forward to having a newborn session for her. I will have to keep an eye out for good accessories and ask the possible photographers what they plan to use.

  • Great article! I agree. Simple is always best.

  • I am OBSESSED with details. I think that they really help tie the story together and you have used them brilliantly. I think that every newborn photographer can benefit form reading this blog! Beautiful work! 🙂

    So precious! adorable <3

  • The subject should always be the spotlight and I love how you explained that so well in your article.

Loved this! I love the simplicity of your use of props and accessories. I am guilty of spending tons of money buying the latest, nice props for sessions. Your images are breathtaking too!

I have to admit – when I first met Christine Catherall it was pretty unconventional.  We met on Babysteals.com and we were talking about a Bumble Diaper Bag that I was looking at buying.  We had just moved to the Red Deer – Central Alberta area and I never gave it much more thought.  We did “see each other” on Facebook from time to time in groups but she was an acquaintance that was lovely but that I knew nothing about – flash forward almost five years later and we have a partnership made in heaven – Central Alberta Doulas & First Blush Photography has united. Fast forward and I had become pregnant with triplets and somehow, I don’t really remember how, we began to talk again.  Christine was looking to getting some hours in to become a Doula, which I had when I got pregnant with my first child – well…when we moved to the Red Deer Area when I was 37 weeks pregnant.  I knew what they were about and how much they can help, but I really wasn’t sure if she was just a crazy lady wanting to get in with the newest set of triplets on the block (sorry Christine – lol). Christine tried for months to get me on board with having her as a Doula but I was really overwhelmed with my pregnancy as well as having a 2 year old at home and multiple extended family drama.  If you know me you know I don’t do drama so having that extra on my plate during my gestation really was going to push me over the edge – but what she offered next was invaluable.

Three beautiful babies – the most precious triplets you have ever seen.

Christine had offered me the opportunity to provide support through Post Partum Doula work.  I really had no idea what that meant but she offered to do laundry and dishes and I thought that was a pretty sweet deal, so I accepted. Fast forward again to when I had my three beautiful children.  I carried my triplets to almost 36 weeks and so we had a very short NICU stay at the Red Deer Regional Hospital (17 days) but while I was there Christine popped in to meet them after she was finished with another client’s birth across the hall.  I have never met a lady that was as genuinely excited about my children as she was completely un-intrusive and so excited that they were here – healthy, happy and beautiful. Having Christine come to the home in the following months was life saving for me. We scheduled her to start coming once my mom left when the babies were three months old.  It probably was not the most ideal time for her as I am sure post partum doula services specialize in fresh from the hospital babies but she never once complained.  She was one of the few visitors I would allow in the house seeing how I had 4 children under 2.5 years old and my house and life was a mess…let’s not forget I would normally go several days without showering – I was just too tired, and all the experts agree that babies have to get used to your smell…right??? I was so lonely at the time – Red Deer Alberta was not really “new” but I was still very isolated in my town and our closest family was 3 hours away.  She would come and just sit and let me ramble on about anything that was going through my mind…anything at all…then wait as I would forget what I was talking about.  She would help to feed babies.  She would play and interact with the babies.  She would bring crafts and Timbits for my oldest who was trying his hardest to adjust – Christine would be forever known to him as the “donut and Pom Pom lady” as she would always bring Pom Pom’s for him to make crafts with, or scoot around the house with.  She was a lifesaver for committing that time to Jakie alone – she always made him feel special and she was one of the few new people that would come into our home that he actually liked and didn’t freak out over. I need to add that she was also vomited on MANY times…and peed on…normally by my Baby B – William.red-deer-alberta-canada-family-children-portraits-first-blush-photography*** Ok. So how does all this work into a business partnership? Christine has always been one of my number one fans and when I found out that she was building a Doula Business in Red Deer Alberta I contacted her about possibly providing some artwork for her walls and the relationship grew even further into an awesome partnership where First Blush Photography – Red Deer Photographer has created exclusive discounts available ONLY for customers of Central Alberta Doulas.  I am not talking a few pennies here and there – I am talking heavily discounted sessions and products. These two beautiful images are of my very first customer from Central Alberta Doulas and while we are still waiting on her baby to be finished being baked, she made for one of the most beautiful maternity sessions I have ever shot.  You can read more about her session here.

The cold was no match for the beauty of pregnancy.

A maternal figure that is perfect and monumental.

If you are considering a doula, Central Alberta Doulas should definitely be one of your phone calls.  The support you will receive will be priceless.

Let me rest people and get back to where I’m supposed to be…. Well, you do a great job girl and you are lucky to have friends and doulas! 🙂 Beautiful photography too!

  • That could be the kindest thing I have ever read about me Anna – lol. Thank you so much for the compliment.

  • Thank you Jamie for letting me know that original link didn’t work well..
Thank you also for the lovely compliment. I will tell you though three infants are and will always be less work than a 2.5 year old. It’s a fact. Lol.

  • Becky

    Wow! Just gorgeous!

  • Lisa

I love your photos! You’re very talented!

  • Great story. Wishing you much success.

You only turn two once.
The age of two opens up a whole new world of exciting changes and possibilities for a child.  They begin to understand the world in a whole different way as they big to transition from baby hood to early childhood.  They begin to understand (or not understand) what it means to be a “toddler” and they grow and finally being to fit into some REALLY AWESOME CLOTHES.

This little beauty enchanted me all session long while celebrating her 2nd birthday.  A beautiful dress by Tutu Du Monde and a harmonica made the day.  She was just as happy as a clam and more importantly determined to make the harmonica make some noise – and what a wonderful noise it was!  It was a beautiful tune that sounded like the Happy Birthday song in her own sense.  She blew and blew and blew on that instrument and was so pleased with the outcome – it was so much fun to watch that discovery in real time.
A little about the shoot itself – I really enjoy focusing on the subject who I am shooting – in this case it was this wonderful two year old.  Adding too much ‘extra’ to a shoot distracts from the subject and what a terrible situation it would be to not have her not focused on completely.  It would have been a darn shame indeed!  I have a two prop maximum for toddler and child sessions to make sure that you will get the images you really want – not a bunch of ‘stuff’ clogging up the image and taking the focus off the subject.  I have seen a lot of images in the last several years online and I find it really disappointing when a child is literally lost in props and your searching to find them.  It certainly does not cause me sleeping issues, but looking at images like those are what really helped me personally define my style as I would not want my children shot in that manner.  Is it right for another photographer – sure and I certainly have no problem with that, it just isn’t for First Blush Photography.
